Travel to the India International Kite Festival

To mark the end of the winter season, the people of Gujarat engage themselves in the ‘uttarayan’ festival or ‘Makar Sankranti’. It is a celebration of kites for the people of Gujarat. The International Kite Festival also takes place in Ahmedabad on the same date.

From the rising of the sun, everyone gathers on their rooftops to take part in this lively and exciting festival. Throughout the day, all remain busy in fighting with rival kites soaring high. Not even the non breezy day dampens the spirits of the kite fliers. The people of Gujarat forget every hardship that they undergo throughout the year and fly kites with great enthusiasm. Conquering the sky remains the objective of the day.

Kites with a riot of colors and sizes dominate the sky. Preparation for this festival begins days before the main event and life comes to a standstill in Gujarat on the festival day. Everyone with their families, their friends, relatives engage in the flying of kites and make traditional food of Gujarat thus making this event of Gujarat a grand affair. Spectators and those who live outside Gujarat equally enjoy this eventful day with the participants. Kite makers not only from India but also from around the world make designer kites for this special occasion.

Let the child be released in you and fly a kite!
